Have you considered that the apparent increase in the frequency of earthquakes is a result of improvements both in sensing technology and coverage of the sensing stations? For instance, the Seismological Society notes that between 1932 and 2008 the number of stations used for detecting earthquakes increased from 7 to nearly 400. Coupling that with improvements in the technology used to detect earthquakes could result in there seeming to be more earthquakes if those earthquakes have always been happening and were simply not being picked up before.
